Audio: tuning comparison (0:09)
tuning comparison repeats a melody three times in different tunings: Pythagorean tuning followed by just intonation followed by 12TET. The tuning comparison figure shows the score:
- Bar 1 is a chromatic scale with 12 notes.
- Bar 2 is an interval of a perfect fifth, G#D#.
Hopefully, you can hear the difference in the pitch of the notes caused by the different tuning systems. Do not worry if you cannot, the differences are quite subtle. Which is the better system is, ultimately, a matter of perception. It is fair to say that the differences in the tuning systems are more pronounced in harmony than they are in melody.
