Overview

Sound is the fundamental component of music.

Writing music is a process of organising sound.

This part of the guide examines sound in detail. It looks at two different approaches to sound:

1. The science of sound section studies the properties of a physical object known as a sound wave. This is a scientific approach to sound.
2. The perception of sound section looks at the ways in which a listener experiences and perceives sound. This is a psychological approach to sound.

An instrument generates sound. The instrument section provides an overview of the different types of instrument available to write music. There is a lot more detail about individual instruments and groups of instruments dotted throughout the rest of the guide.

The final section looks at the techniques for capturing and storing sound as a recording.
